Close WindowCanton cuts ribbon on Fairhope Nature Preserve
On Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 10 a.m. the city will celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day by dedicating the Fairhope Nature Preserve. This family event will include a dedication ceremony, hayrides, crafts, tree planting, food and refreshments. The celebration is free and open to the public.
Due to widespread flooding in 2003, the city initiated the design and construction of several trunk storm sewers, including the 30th Street NE trunk sewer that runs from Harmont Avenue to Millvale Avenue. This 66-inch diameter pipe drains roughly through 250 acres of land and outlets to the Fairhope Stream. The Fairhope Nature Preserve received its name from the Fairhope Stream that runs north to south through the preserve.
The Fairhope Nature Preserve was made possible through the use of two Clean Ohio grants and generous donations from the former property owners Robert Kitson and Leonard Knell; 69 acres were secured by the city to become a nature preserve.
